2019 Undercurrents Festival Dives Deep into the Dark Trenches of Canadian Indie Theatre

Updated: Dec 13, 2018

Ottawa Fringe is pleased to announce the lineup for the 9th annual undercurrents: theatre below the mainstream festival, running February 6-16, 2019 in four venues: Arts Court Theatre, Arts Court Studio, LabO, and an OC Transpo bus!

"This year's line-up is the most diverse in the festival's history – and brings together Ottawa's most exciting emerging artists with some of the city's most established” says Festival Director, Patrick Gauthier. “Add in a bilingual show, a play staged on a bus, and a dog on stage... what's not to love?"

The 2019 undercurrents festival will host artists from across Ontario and present over thirty performances of original work. Opening the festival is Toronto’s Shaista Latif, with her boldly hilarious show The Archivist, on Wednesday, February 7, at 7:00 pm. A creation of a live archive of where Latif has been, where she is going, and where she is now.

The 2019 line-up features five productions by Ottawa theatre creators: indie theatre sweethearts, Second Step, bring us Light(less)*, an adventure for all ages about a boy, his light and the moon; Margo MacDonald and Geoff McBride’s The Persistent Stain* will provide late night entertainment with the story of an aging punk band finding their fame a little too late in life; award-winning playwright Pierre Brault’s newest work, Coach of the Year, is a ripped-from-the-headlines story about abuse in youth sports; the charming Kim Kilpatrick brings her heartwarming show Raising Stanley / Life With Tulia after a sold-out run at the GCTC studio earlier this summer; and undercurrents partners with the University of Ottawa Theatre Department to present the student production By-Product.D-rivé, a gritty, bilingual, love letter to Ottawa/Gatineau.

Other visiting artists include Vancouver’s Carmen Aguirre – creator of the hugely popular Blue Box at the

2012 undercurrents festival – returning with Broken Tailbone, the story of Canada’s underground Latinix dance halls, that will get even the most reluctant audience members up on their feet and learning the salsa.

Having toured across Canada from Vancouver to Halifax, take a ride with Tales of an Urban Indian, a site-specific production staged on an OC Transpo bus. The story of Simon Douglas - the man who just won’t stop talking to you on the bus - about his mom, grandmother, girlfriend, and the reserve.

As always, undercurrents will host free programming, including New Play Tuesday. Consistently sold out, New Play Tuesday provides Ottawa-based playwrights an opportunity to test out new works and receive feedback from excited audience members. Our opening night ‘after-party’ will feature pop-up art installations, local DJs, and of course, Dominion City beer. And be sure to bundle up for our On The Rocks patio party - a whiskey tasting on the sparkling new OAG Sky Lounge.
